Once I Knew You

Of things that always rhymed with my old name

I never quite could hear the sentiment

and when you come again, my hand to claim

you cannot see the way of which I went.

How can you hold a heart you cannot find,

determined not by echoes of the past?

How do you reconnect the string of kind

when kinship of our souls could never last?

I beg of you to leave me where I stand

let bygones of our childhood lay in peace

and when you come again to claim my hand

think how you, once before, this deed did cease.

So listen now, my self from foreign days

it is now time we go our separate ways
